Pahoehoe and A'a

Pahoehoe and A'a

Lava fields from [relatively] recent lava flows from Kilauea. The lighter gray lava is Pahoehoe (smooth, fast-moving, low-viscosity lava), while the darker lava is A’a (rough, slow-moving, high-viscosity lava).

The lava of the coastal flats were an excellent demonstration of the two types of lava flowing from Hawaii’s volcanoes.
