Block M —
The “Block M” formation of the University of Minnesota Marching Band’s pregame show. This formation has been a tradition for much of the band’s history.
Last year I attempted to take photos of the band using a fast shutter speed - typically 1/100 or 1/160 - but had to shoot wide-open at f/4 and with an ISO of 400 or 800. Since I had the tripod for this past game, I figured I’d forgo the fast shutter speed and shoot at a smaller aperture and slower shutter.
A side benefit was the nice blur on the flags. However, since I started taking photos of the band I’ve noticed that — except where the flags are held at attention — there is always — always — a flag out of sync with the rest…
