The Angel Wing

The Angel Wing

The Angel Wing, a part of Mount Gould, hides Grinnell Glacier behind it’s stony edifice, backing up against the Garden Wall, an arête forming part of the North American Continental Divide. Hanging on the arête are two more “hanging glaciers,” The Salamander (large white band middle-right), and Gem Glacier (just right of the Angel Wing).

Gem Glacier is the smallest remaining glacier in Glacier National Park. Oddly, although all other glaciers have been receding over the past century, the Salamander and Gem Glaciers have not changed dramatically in size. Grinnell Lake, fed by meltwater from the glaciers, is in the lower center.

This picture is taken from the Grinnell Glacier trail. We’d hiked up to the “picnic area” on the second day in Glacier National Park, but the rest of the trail going to the base of Grinnell Glacier was closed (I understand an animal carcass had been spotted higher up the trail, and raised the threat that grizzly bears would be on the prowl to scavenge).
