The 1980 eruption collapsed the north flank of St. Helens, causing the largest landslide in recorded history, and destroying the valley below.

The south side of the volcano was spared landslides. But the heat of the eruption quickly melted the mountain's glaciers, causing massive mudslides ("lahars"). The lahars destroyed large portions of forest, but not as totally as the landslides.
